You are used to being successful—in school, in extracurricular activities, in life! As your plans for college life form, you want to make sure that you continue on a path that other successful students have chosen. The College of Design has a living and learning program for students who have high expectations for themselves and who expect great things from their university—the Athena Program.
Athena is an academic/residential program available to high-achieving students in the College of Design. This unique program creates a community that can foster your personal development, both intellectually and socially, while providing facilities to meet your academic and living needs.
Athena combines a social community with programs designed to complement coursework and student interests. You will be “living and learning” with student designers from every program in the college to collaborate on projects, compare notes on classes, and share your interest in the world of design. You will also have the benefit of having studio space to foster your design genius.
To be eligible for the program you must be an entering freshman in any major in the College of Design. Your high school GPA must be 3.0 or above to apply. Participation in extra curricular activities in high school will be considered.
A group of staff, faculty, and peer mentors are dedicated to helping you be successful in your first year at ASU by providing guidance as you develop your interests and meeting with you and other Athena students for informal discussions. The on-site Program Coordinator is available to meet with you during office hours. The coordinator provides programming for a wide range of firm tours, meetings, trips, and other events that will enhance your first-year experience.
All Athena participants must enroll in the fall semester in DSC 180, Athena Design Success. This exciting, one-credit course will focus on developing skills necessary for being successful in the College of Design, ASU, and in your professional field after graduation. The focus of the course will include project planning, team work, networking, and time management. A small class fee of $50 is affiliated with this course to cover the costs of field trips and tours.
When you apply to the Athena program, along with a completed application to the program, you also need to apply for on-campus housing. Residential Life will notify you when you have been assigned to a residence hall on campus. Then, if you are admitted to the Athena Residential College, we will contact you with your acceptance to the program, which includes the residential hall for Athena program students. Regardless of what hall Residential Life assigns to you, acceptance into Athena will mean you are relocated to the designated Athena hall. You must live in the designated hall to be part of the program.
Applications are now available for fall 2008 admittance into Athena. Apply early.
