Experience, Philosophy, and Practicex

The Council for Design Excellence is a select group of industry leaders infused with a potent blend of vision and experience, focused on encouraging forward thinking, making good design choices, and advocating for change.

Organizational Structure

Membership on the Council is by invitation to an individual. Each member contributes at least $1,000 annually.

Events include three to four professional forums addressing a variety of design issues and an annual meeting. Through committees, members address a defined challenge and use practical expertise to help shape programs through professional advising and program development.

Goals

The Council for Design Excellence serves as a liaison between ASU's College of Design and the community. Driven by a special concern for the quality of life in the region, the Council promotes a community agenda to maintain the highest standards of design and planning. These goals are accomplished by participating in the direct involvement in college enterprise building relationships to community leaders identifying and investing financial resources advocating for the college.

2007–2008 CDE Forums at the Phoenix Urban Research Lab

Meetings for the Council for Design Excellence take place at PURL, which is an information-rich environment for researchers, decision makers, industry professionals, and students to debate, collaborate, and seek new solutions to the most pressing design problems facing cities today. PURL research serves as a catalyst for progressive urbanism, in Phoenix and beyond.

The agenda and speakers for the 2007–2008 CDE Forums are being formulated now. Please check back for an updated calendar of events for the coming year.

Last year, the membership were treated to an engaging calendar of speakers, capped by the 2007 Design Excellence Dinner with speaker Tom Kelley of IDEO.

The forums were scheduled for 8:00–9:30 am and included a continental breakfast. The Phoenix Urban Research Lab, or PURL, is located at 234 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, on the southwest corner of Central Avenue and Van Buren. Parking is available at the northeast corner of Van Buren and Central Avenue (surface lot) and at an adjacent parking garage with entrances on Van Buren Street and 1st Avenue.
