CHAIR and PROFESSOR, Department of Industrial Design
The Department of Industrial Design in the ASU College of Design is seeking a Chair to lead its newly formed department with an accredited program in industrial design in an era of change and immense possibility. The Industrial Design Chair position is a full-time position (at full professor rank) with tenure. The Chair will collaborate with faculty, staff, and stakeholders to develop and implement curriculum; assist faculty in developing their teaching, research, and service; be effective in administration; share in cultivating college vision and missions; teach at least one course per year in a studio, lecture, or seminar format; engage in research or creative scholarship; lead fundraising and outreach efforts for the department; build collaborative relationships with university and external partners; and be an active presence in the department and design community.
The required qualifications include a bachelor’s and master’s degree, one of which must be Industrial Design, Product Design, or an equivalent degree and a record of achievement in the field of industrial design appropriate to rank of professor. Desired qualifications include demonstrated excellence in teaching, administrative experience in a university setting, engagement and scholarship with one or more of a wide array of topics including user-centered design and/or user-centered design research, strategic planning for new product development, ethnography in design, and/or sustainable technologies.
The Department of Industrial Design continues to be one of the most highly-rated programs of its kind and features a strong faculty and student body. It is enhanced by programs in Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Housing and Community Development, Interior Design, and Visual Communication Design, which comprise the disciplines of the college. To support integrated innovation, the Industrial Design program teaches both traditional and cutting-edge design skills and knowledge, including a strong visual acumen; technological aptitude; a practical knowledge of manufacturing, sustainability, and ergonomics; critical comprehension of design history; and a clear understanding of how to identify, evaluate, and respond to the physical and psychological needs of users. Qualitative research is perceived as a core competency of the program to better understand user needs, behavior, motivations, and expectations.

The Department of Interior Design in the ASU College of Design seeks a Chair to lead its newly formed department in an era of change and immense possibility. The department offers an acclaimed, accredited (by CIDA), four-year undergraduate program in interior design and supports two cross-college graduate programs, the Master of Science in Design and PhD in Environmental Planning and Design. The Chair position is full-time (at full professor rank) with tenure. The Chair will collaborate with faculty, staff, and stakeholders to develop and implement curriculum; assist faculty in developing their teaching, research/creative activity, and service; be effective in administration; share in cultivating the college vision and missions; teach at least one course per year in a studio, lecture, or seminar format; engage in research/creative activity; and be an active presence in the department, college, and design community. The required qualifications include a professional degree in architecture, interior design, or a related design discipline; a record of achievement in the field of architecture, interior design, or a related design discipline appropriate to the rank of professor; and demonstrated abilities in leadership, strategic planning, and fundraising. Desired qualifications include a demonstrated commitment to promoting the growth and evolution of the profession of interior design and education; excellence in teaching; administrative experience in a university or large-corporate setting; professional registration; and engagement and scholarship with one or more of a wide array of topics, including history/theory/criticism, sustainability, healthcare and healing environments, materials, lighting, and/or creativity in the workplace, design practice, design education.
Programs offered by the Department of Interior Design continue to be among the most highly rated in North America. The undergraduate program is one of the flagship programs in the United States and features a strong, diverse faculty and growing student enrollment. It collaborates with other college programs including those in architecture, planning, landscape architecture, industrial design, and visual communications. It also participates in a new non-professional degree, the Bachelor of Arts in Design Studies. The Department of Visual Communication Design (VCD) in the ASU College of Design is seeking a Chair to lead the its newly formed department with an accredited program in visual communication design in an era of change and immense possibility. The VCD Chair position is a full-time position (at full professor rank) with tenure. The Chair will collaborate with faculty, staff, and stakeholders to develop and implement curriculum; assist faculty in developing their teaching, research, and service; be effective in administration; share in cultivating college vision and missions; teach at least one course per year in a studio, lecture, or seminar format; engage in research or creative scholarship; lead fundraising and outreach efforts for the department; build collaborative relationships with university and external partners; develop a college and university focus visualization; and be an active presence in the department and design community. The required qualifications include a bachelor’s and master’s degree, one of which must be Visual Communication Design, Graphic Design, or an equivalent degree, and a record of achievement in the field of graphic design appropriate to rank of professor. Desired qualifications include demonstrated excellence in teaching; administrative experience in a university setting; engagement and scholarship with one or more of a wide array of topics including visualization, digital media, interactive design, and film animation.
The Department of Visual Communication Design continues to be one of the most highly-rated programs of its kind and features a strong faculty and student body. It is enhanced by programs in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, housing and community development, interior design, and industrial design, which comprise the disciplines of the college. The Visual Communication Design program emphasizes appropriate strategic communication through a design process that includes research, analysis, conceptualization planning, and realization. This process leads to innovative visual communication solutions for contemporary design problems that are local to global in scope. Students integrate theory and method, culture and context, environmental and human factors, traditional and contemporary technologies, and visual aesthetics to develop comprehensive design strategies. These strategies are applied to physical artifacts (books, brochures, packaging), digital media (websites, CD-ROMs, video games, animation/film, kiosks, interface), and environments (exhibits, sign systems). The objective is to provide communication design strategies that inform, educate, direct, and communicate effectively. Visual Communication Design students have the opportunity to collaborate with Industrial Design students and participate in a program—InnovationSpace—that focuses on integrated innovation and is a transdisciplinary enterprise with partners in the schools of business and engineering at ASU. The Visual Communication Design program is actively involved with the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), playing a critical role in the development and facilitation of national and regional initiatives.
