The radiant cooling and heating system began operation in 1999, but a lightning strike on July 23, 1999 disabled the control and data collection system for over a year. The control system computer and a number of components had to be replaced. Also the National Instruments data collection system (that monitors envelope conditions) had to be replaced. It wasn't until August 12, 2000, over a year later, that the control and data collection systems were back to being completely operational. So the beginning of calibrated data is August 12, 2000.

System comfort control performance is shown in graphs below, both on an annual basis and for typical days during each season.

Passive Performance Fall 2000
This period provides unique data on the passive performance of the house because there was an extended period when the cooling system was not operational and the outdoor ambient high temperatures rose to the 110F range. This data has been particularly useful in validating the results of a simulation program (EnergyPlus) that predicts the performance of a high mass house.
