The minor in design studies can be pursued in Architectural Studies, Industrial Design, Interior Design History, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, or Visual Communication Design and is for students who have an interest in design history and aesthetics but are pursuing a major in another field. A minor in the design fields aims to inform students about the importance and impact of the global community on design and to provide an overview of design throughout history and the process of design thinking. Students must complete a minimum of 15 to18 semester hours in the intended minor and achieve a minimum grade point average (GPA) prior to pursuing the minor studies and a minimum GPA in the minor classes to be awarded the minor. The minor may not be open to students of all majors. Please contact an advisor in the College of Design Student Services office if you wish to minor in any program for applicable verifications and permissions.

A concentration in architectural studies; landscape architecture studies; design studies in industrial design, interior design, or visual communication design; interior design history; and urban planning is available under the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) degree, a program intended for the student who has academic interests that might not be satisfied with existing majors. Building on two academic concentrations (or one double concentration) and an interdisciplinary core, students in the BIS program take active roles in creating their educational plans and defining their career goals. If you wish to pursue the BIS degree, meet with an advisor in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies in University College.
